Climate-Responsive Home Design for Chennai

Design decisions that respond to Chennai’s climate instead of fighting it.

Reduce unwanted heat gain

Use orientation, shading, roof treatment, window proportions and appropriate glazing to manage heat rather than relying only on mechanical cooling.

Use ventilation intentionally

Cross ventilation works best when openings and internal planning are coordinated. Service spaces, courtyards and shaded openings can contribute to comfort.

Design for monsoon water

Roof falls, rainwater outlets, external drainage, waterproofing details and site levels should be coordinated before finishes begin.

Choose finishes for the environment

Exterior paints, sealants, waterproofing systems and window details should be selected with heat, humidity and rain exposure in mind.
